Sample processing

A variety of equipment for sample processing and sample preparation for analysis is available. This includes:

  • Spex 8000M mixer mill
  • Spex 8530 shatterbox
  • SPEX X-300 automated fluxer
  • SPEX 3636 X-Press automated press
  • Fisher Model 300 sonic dismembrator
  • Several drying ovens and a muffle furnace

Clean lab

A 350 square foot metal-free, positive pressure, clean laboratory equipped with:

  • Two laminar flow work stations
  • Two fume hoods
  • Millipore ultrapure water system
  • Milestone Ethos-UP microwave digestion unit
  • Analab closed environment evaporation system
  • Two centrifuges
  • Ultrasonic bath
  • Several Savillex acid stills
  • Five temperature-controlled chemical-resistant hot plates
  • A separate weighing room holds two Metler-Toledo analytical balances and a Sartorius top-pan balance.

Analytical equipment

SEES houses three handheld pXRF units:

  • One Olympus DELTA Family Handheld XRF Analyzer with:
    • Rhodium (Rh) anode 40 kV X-ray tube
    • Silicon drift detector
  • Two Vanta M Series Handheld XRF Analyzers with:
    • Rhodium (Rh) anode 50 kV X-ray tube
    • Large area SDD (Silicon Drift Detector)
    • In-line camera for aiming
    • 3mm X-ray spot collimation
    • 5 megapixel sample camera for documenting tests

MatFab Facility

In addition, there is an extensive range of instrumentation available in the MatFab Facility, many of which were acquired via funding to SEES faculty. These include:

  • JEOL JXA-8230 Superprobe Electron Microprobe
  • JEOL JSM-1T700HR field-emission scanning electron microprobe (FESEM) + EBSD/CL with automated mineralogy capabilities
  • Hitachi S-3400N environmental SEM + EDX/CL
  • Agilent 7800 ICP-MS with collision cell
  • NewWave 213nm laser
  • Thermo Element-XR high resolution ICP-MS
  • Rigaku ZXS Primus IV wavelength-dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (XRF)
