Shay is a PhD candidate in the Finzel research group with research interests in basin analysis and tectonics. He is currently studying the sedimentary record of Apennine mountain building to assess models of Mediterranean tectonic development.

Prior to his arrival at Iowa he completed a MS at New Mexico State University and a BS at Rocky Mountain College.
