Earn your BS in Earth & Environmental Science

Earth and Environmental Sciences majors study the geologic, hydrologic, atmospheric, and biotic systems that make up our dynamic Earth, emphasizing local and global interactions between these systems in the present and over deep time. The major is well-suited for students interested in the natural world, and provides ample opportunities for hands-on learning and research, including faculty research, field-based courses, Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory, Lakeside Laboratory, and numerous multi-day field trips across the country and the world.

The major comprises three tracks that span the disciplines from traditional geoscience to soils, water, and climate to environmental science with an ecology emphasis.

Choose a track

Earth and planetary science

Learn about planetary composition and processes, emphasizing how planets, their environments, and life have evolved and continue to evolve.

Environmental geoscience

Discover how recent human actions and climate change interacts with surface processes that involve soil, groundwater, and other near-surface materials.

Environmental bioscience

Study how altered ecosystem structure and function impacts population and community dynamics across different space and time scales.

The integrated biological, chemical, physical, and geological components of the degree program offer students opportunities in and exposure to the entire spectrum of Earth and environmental sciences while at the University of Iowa. This program offers flexibility to discover your passion, while preparing you to tackle real-world problems in job sectors like industry, consulting, government, and academia.
